Being a HUGE fan of Doctor Who when I first saw this trailer I did a little internal squeal! Then when I finished the trailer I squealed a little bit more, it looks terrifying (and I'm not so great with horrors) but it did intrigue me.
Before I continue, here is the teaser trailer and the first full trailer; get ready to hide behind your pillow!
A lot of horror films make use of mirrors - often it's to summon some evil supernatural force/being ('Candyman', 'Bloody Mary'), but Oculus brings this to a whole new level with the mirror itself being or holding the evil supernatural force. For me, someone who is afraid of the dark and has an over-active imagination, this whole concept is pretty terrifying and I'm pretty sure if I summon up the courage to watch the film, I won't be trusting mirrors for a long time afterwards!
However, if you're into horrors and love to be scared then you may just love this film. It premiered in September 2013 at the Toronto International Film Festival and currently holds a rating of 72% on Rotten Tomatoes with the overall consensus being:
"With an emphasis on dread over gore and an ending that leaves the door wide open for sequels, Oculus could be just the first spine-tingling chapter in a new franchise for discerning horror fans".
Of course, let's not forget it stars Karen Gillan in the lead role, which is definitely an incentive for me to watch it; not just because I love Doctor Who but because she's such a talented actress and it'll be interesting to see her in a completely different role from the wonderful Amy Pond.
